@ WPSNA: contact Jon, Roman or Henry to join us
9th December 2022 at 11:53 am #5883Jonathan PykeParticipantHere’s what we did last time
Roman + Jon x Henry = Winter Training Camp @ WPNSA
26 & 27 November 2022 (Camp One)A “training camp” with a rockstar sounds a bit daunting and nothing like the thoughtful and most enjoyable coaching approach Henry brings to our weekends. We have some outline plans coming into the camps, often chatting in messages over a week or so before, and then decide over coffee on what we will work on in the weather conditions of the day and choose sails and adjust rig settings together.
And then the day on the water begins with Henry leading from in the RIB and ‘live’ coaching us. We work well together and do have a lot of fun over the weekend. There’s nice banter and funny moments – and lots of helping each other. Henry’s round up at the end of each day with videos and photos taken from the RIB provide examples to the ‘pinpointing advice’ he expertly helps us on individually – and these magically sink in immediately and are excellent takeaways.
We learn from one another also, sharing experience – what worked well, what can be better and how and so on – and so it really is a “training camp” for us. Combined with our teaming up for events and regattas, Henry’s coaching is building capacity in us for doing better – and we are enjoying our sailing all the more for it. We talk about things and recall these learnings after a day’s racing somewhere, like in Spain when we competed in the 2022 European Masters.
We were lucky with the weather. A fresh 25 to 32 knots on day one and some thrilling rides. And on day two, five to seven knots. The training covered all conditions nicely. We like Weymouth a lot for the water, wind and the great facilities there.
There’s a warm feeling among all folk using the WPNSA. It’s really a caravan of sailors along with friends and family. Roman’s son Platon took part in Laser training which was well attended over two days. They enjoyed a great Dad and Son sailing weekend away together.
Camping on site is a dream and there are lots of hotels and B&Bs within a cycle ride or short drive. It’s always a bit sad leaving on Sunday afternoon after a great weekend together but always with a warm and happy glow, and nice memories.
Some quotes from the weekend
Roman “…ze training was cool” Roman to Jon (banging on Jon’s van windows early Saturday morning as the wind was forecast to go over 30 knots later on) “Jon, wake up, we are ready to go”
Jon “We are sailing better with Henry’s coaching in 2022, and so coming out of another training camp we have learned and practised new techniques” Jon to Roman “You repaired it with duct tape??!!! ”
Henry “Great weekend, thanks guys. Looking forward to the next one. On the way to the airport!” …
Roman and Jon “He truly is an international rockstar”.
