Over the weekend of 20-21 April sailors from the new Finn fleet at Rutland Sailing Club organised a training session supported by the BFA. Four Rutland sailors, all relatively new to sailing, organised the training to find out how to set up and sail their Finns.

Many thanks to Martin Hughes for travelling up to Rutland Sailing Club from Warsash SC to provide an excellent day of Finn training. There were 4 sailors with a variety of racing backgrounds but all relatively new to the Finn class, all of whom were eager to make the most of Martin’s expertise and experience.

Martin provided a top-class training session. The morning was land-based, looking at boat set up and tuning. In the afternoon Martin boarded the rib and provided on the water coaching in perfect wind conditions. The sailors all improved their tacking skills, boat handling and sail setup.

The structure of the day was spot on. Martin was exceptionally supportive and prior to the event was our hotline for answering a whole range of questions about the Finn.

We now have a small fleet of Finns at Rutland SC, all of which hope to be joining the Finn racing calendar soon. We are also looking into planning and hosting future Finn events at Rutland SC.

A massive thank you to Martin for passing on his enthusiasm, knowledge and passion for this well-loved boat!

If you would like a Finn training session at your club contact Martin Hughes, the BFA Training Officer.
