Nearly halfway through the British Finn 2026 Traveller Trophy Series for the coveted Silver Finn trophy, and the 2025 winner, John Greenwood, is well ahead on points, going into the non-discardable Vaikobi British National Championships in Brixham this weekend. The returning 3-times National Champion, Cameron Tweedle, still an Under 29 category sailor, is second, with BFA President Richard Sharp third.
The 2026 North Sails sponsored ‘Super Series’ kicked off in mid-April, with the Northern Area Championships, ably run by West Riding SC, before the action moved south to the UK Masters Championships at Hayling Island SC. The Hayling PRO did a great job of fitting in all 6 races, with a light airs day in Bracklesham Bay on the Saturday, before a sturdy breeze on Sunday made for more traditional Hayling Bay west conditions. John Greenwood maintained his early-season form, taking both the first two events, with the Hayling victory being particularly impressive against an international field that included IFA President Rob McMillan from Australia (2nd) and Philipe De Silva (PQR), as well as current UK National Champion Lawrence Crispin and multi-class champion Nick Craig.
Two weeks later, the Southern Area Championships saw a return to the spiritual home of the British Finn Class, Bosham SC, where the first Finns in the UK were based in the late 1950’s, and a growing and vibrant fleet still remains. The Southern Area Championships attracted a younger field of several ex-British Sailing Team and BFA U23 squad members, who couldn’t resist the abiding attraction of the Finn. It was great to see Matt Howard, Pete McCoy and Cameron Tweedle battling it out at the front of the fleet, but GGM John Greenwood proved that years of experience are just as valuable as youth in the Finn, taking the third spot on the podium, to cement his current 41-point lead in the Traveller Series.
